Will all those who still have a backbone please stand up?
The term politically correct is defined by Merriam-Webster as “conforming to a belief that language and practices which could offend political sensibilities (as in matters of sex or race) should be eliminated.” We live in a politically correct day and age in which one not only has to think before he or she speaks, but must also calculate the potential offensive caliber of every rising idea, taking into account—to name just a few—the race, gender, occupation, emotional and physical weaknesses, childhood trauma, self-image, appearance, and financial struggles of listeners. It’s a wonder anyone speaks at all.
I’ve come to comprehend the catastrophic havoc that preaching political correctness to children reaps upon their resiliency and fortitude, engendering instead fragile, insecure spirits. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m in no way advocating bullying, suggesting that we should ignore vicious acts by one child toward another, or proposing that we cease to invoke the Golden Rule of “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” What I am affirming, however, is that ingraining in children’s impressionable minds that they must fear their every utterance due to the fact that someone, somewhere, may take personal offense, is as stifling and detrimental as instructing them to feel persecuted by the hearsay of others.
Children indoctrinated with political correctness don’t learn the sincere reality that people can be mean, but it shouldn’t break your spirit. They don’t discover a sense of self-worth upon—heaven forbid—standing up for themselves, perhaps even answering back assertively now and again, and hence emerging from a situation with one’s head held high and dignity in tact. What they decipher instead is that it is rewarding to play the role of the eternal victim. They begin to fear speaking what they believe to be true, to hide the authenticity of their thoughts behind a shield of political correctness, and to in turn feel entitled to inflict that dishonest, restrictive limitation on the speech of others. These are our future Fairness Doctrine champions.
As an author, I do not seek to be politically correct, nor do I aim to coddle the sensitivities of my readers. I strive to disclose the truth as I see it, one that I hope will inspire others to work toward the growth and prosperity of this great country. I did not apologize for referring to Barack Hussein Obama by his full name during the 2008 campaign. I am appalled by clueless Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano’s aversion to the word terrorism and preference for the much gentler, kinder “man-caused disasters.” And I’m horrified that we have a President who shakes hands with the likes of Hugo Chávez and repeatedly bows to world leaders—both literally and figuratively—yet couldn’t bring himself to mention the word terrorism in his televised commentary following the Fort Hood killings.
I hope that this administration’s prioritization of political correctness doesn’t lead to yet another devastating attack on a great American city. And I pray that parents, teachers, and adults of all walks of life begin to take a good, hard look at our increasingly politically correct society, and to comprehend that a nation is only as courageous and supple as the sum of its parts.

It seems to me that people are becoming more and more afraid to say anything at all for fear of being accused of offending someone, even if no offense was intended.
I agree with you.! And, if parents haven’t begun indoctrinating their children by the first grade, our public school systems will certainly do it for them. (Rush is right – they are “government schools”).

I am not afraid to say what is on my mind and I do not care if it offends anyone because I live in America and we have FREEDOM OF SPEECH and I use it when I feel that I need to. I read you article and it was awesome,
Thank You
Donna J
Ditto to all the above! The PC People are trying to make thin skinned whiners out of the American people instead of strong resiliant Americans that we’ve always been.Grow a backbone and be strong!!!!!
Ditto to all the above!!The PC people are trying to make thin skinned whiners out of the American people through our children. We have always been strong, resiliant people. That’s what the word American means. Grow a backbone and stand up for Free Speech!!!!
It’s sad but true what Jedediah Bila says. It is high time we start speaking “our” minds.
The liberals have allowed us to (pretty much) keep our First Amendment rights. (excepting passage of the “pedophile protection act” as a “poison pill amendment” to a mandatory defense spending bill) I’m STILL looking for that guarentee of not being offended, in any way, in our Constitution! With the kool-aid drinkers getting so hysterical over the subject, it must be in there somewhere!
Political correctness is extraconstitutional Sharia Law.
It is time to be rid of the UNAMERICANS, RADICALS AND COMMUNISTS trying to FUNDAMENTALLY CHANGE our Country. Lets stand together and save what is left before more ruin leads to our demise. This very CORRUPT ADM. needs to GOOOH!!
You are absolutely right. It is time we join together and take back our country! If the so called “representatives” (who fail to represent the true values this country was founded on) are allowed to slam the big government for everyone idea down our throats, we will lose our country as we know it. Remember, the numbers that agree that we are out of control are huge, but somewhat silent. Time to get loud!
I agree, it’s time for us to to make some drastic changes in our cultural framework and especially our government – congress. Goooh is a process with a plan to get rid of the professional and career politicians – http://www.goooh.com – check it out and become a member. America needs you. Thanks.
I have been called a “spik” many a time – some say it “jokingly”, others for meaness – but I always remember a saying from my childhood: “Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words never will”. I never mince words myself, why would a demand that others do it, in regard to my person?
Think before you speak? Concern yourself with offending your fellow human beings?
That’s downright unAmerican and unChristian!
I don’t know why any parent would name their beautiful daughter “Jedediah”, but that’s beside the point. The point is, Jedediah can put together an editorial that clearly exposes the liberal/socialist agenda to throw the “politically correct” blanket over American society. I can’t stand political correctness, and what it does to make America a nation of whimps and victims afraid to speak their minds. In my dream cabinate, Jedediah Bila would be appointed as Secretary of Education.
I am appalled by Janet Napolitano’s sexist description of “man-caused disasters”, as if women and children will never be a part of it.
You’re exactly right ! It’s time we started taking back our country to what it used to be with IN GOD WE TRUST on our money and put prayers back in schools, no matter what beliefs we have in our selected religions and punishing those who break the law, according to the seriousness of the crime, then taking away many of the ‘comforts of home’. STOP our concern of ‘stepping on their toes, regardless of their race, popularity or social standing. STOP messing in other country’s affairs and more attention to our own country, building it back to where it was right after the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. We were TOGETHER, as a nation, at that time. Elect those who are qualified for the job, regardless of what PARTY he/she belongs to. Then get behind them, so long as the project is honest and needed by the people who are benefitted through the indebtedness. Only when we ALL pull together, will we be a strong nation again.
“Students” began to take over higher education in the late 60′s with no more than a wimper from teachers and administrators. They then began to change the leadership, purpose and goals of all goverment educational systems from proven traditional learning to a slow “leftist, radical, progressive indoctrination”. Those students of the 70′s,80′s and 90′s are now the “progressive” educators, professors, lawyers, media and entertainment gurus, union and communiity organizeers and most of the politicians of our current day.
It will take time, committment, courage and unity to “clean house” of these many devotees of an ANTI-Traditional and ANTI-Historic American Culture who have been perpetrated and forced uupon us by the likes of Marx, Lenin, and numerous other followers of a more expanding, elitist. controlling, ever more powerfull centralized State.
No more can we trust in anything the above type of leaders SAY, only in what they DO and the consequences that have followed. (check your history) Accountability, character, wisdom, integrity, truth ….if they don’t exibit these traits, then they are OUT!…NOW! 2010 and 2012!
WAKE UP AMERICA!
Here in louisiana we have a very serious poblem with young mothers having numerous babies many without a known father. The Angola State pen. has an 80% population that was raised without a live in father and yet we fail to address that problem because most are black. Shame on us who pay the bills.
Finally, a voice of truth and conviction! Fabulous! Keep it going!
The left has been promoting change for 40 years in our schools. Pure and simple-Brainwashing or indoctrination. They don’t teach the history of our founding fathers . Plus we have a president that is in agreement with the ideaology of the far left. He said in a speech ” We are only 5 days away from fundamentally changing America ” . They aren’t being PC, they boldly are telling everyone what they intend to do. Why are we allowing the minority take over this country ?
I have long been incensed by pressure from our justice system to refer to those who are caught red-handed–either in person or on tape– inflicting serious harm or killing someone, as simply the suspect or the accused. If I witness with my own two eyes such a crime, it is an absolute insult to my intelligence to have to refer to that person as an alleged perpetrator.
I am going out on a rather dangerous limb here, but someone recently brought to my attention the fact that, Obama’s Muslim background and upbringing plus his own admission to being a Muslim–means that he would be forbidden from speaking against another Muslim. Perhaps I am worrying needlessly and making a mountain out of a molehill, but it does concern me greatly that this might be influencing his decisions and his handling of terrorists who without-a-doubt, and by their own boasting, seek to kill us. I would hope I am wrong about this.
OOOooops !! You ALL missed it !! (If memory serves). I am virtually certain that the very first time the term “politically correct” appeared in print was in a book published in 1949, titled “1984″ by George Orwell (as in ‘Orwelllian’). Its about a totalitarian regime, headed by ‘Big Brother’ (Big ‘Bama?) whose tools of oppression are pervasive government surveillance, public mind control, and the voiding of citizens’ rights, certainly speech.
Other terms used were ‘doublespeak, thoughtcrime, Newspeak’. The sci-fi novel (poli-sci) presents stunning and hair standing parallels with events of 2010.
Maybe if we really start speaking out whats on our mind, people will really start to understand what we are trying to say.
May GOD continue to bless you young lady; your definition of political correctness is the most perfect document I have ever read. As a seventy year old man I have been near tears for the miss use of this tererable inhuman impersonal thing we call political correctiveness. Thanks for saying what every parent, grandparent methinks almost daily.
Thanks for being an American.

Thank you, Jedediah- -”Political correctness” is pure hypocrisy- -truth and honesty is what is needed. If it offends and the shoe fits, too bad! We’ve already had too much “political correctness”, arrogance, lies, innuendo, hypocrisy, non-ethics and immorality, as demonstrated by the current administration- -this administration should resign, gracefully, and GET OUT OF OUR WAY – -instead of continuing to embarrass, threaten and endanger every patriotic American, in this country!
I just finished reading Sarah Palin’s book “Going Rogue”. I admire her and her forthrightness and was incredibly shocked to see the extent to which she was persecuted by those who shared another point of view. Our freedom of speech must be maintained and strengthened or the only people running for public office will be those with only one point of view and our government will be useless to the majority of Americans.
Thank you for the article. I am so glad that there are still Americans who are not afraid to speak their minds and to do it effectively. We have cowtowed to the elites too long. I love my country,The USA and am brokenhearted to see politicians who care more about being elected or re-elected than they do about our nation as a whole. enough is enough.
God Bless you and my prayers are with you.
Yes to the question of standing up!!
I have facebook and on it I say.
STAND-UP~ BE COUNTED
I served in the Milatary @ the end of WW2 & Korea- Yes i did stand-up and would again-in a Heart-beat!!!
I cannot believe most of you are blaming the Dems for what the Republicans have actually done. The School Board in Texas (Republicans) control what is published in most of the school books used in the US. It is the Republican Party that is trying to change our government to a Fascists regime. The Europeans and even the Russians have published this in news articles several years ago. I think all of you need to wakeup to the truth.
