By Jedediah Bila, Author and Political Commentator

When I first heard the news that twenty-three-year-old MTV reality star Heidi Montag had ten plastic surgery procedures in one day, I nearly choked on my lunch.  My immediate reaction was why would such a pretty girl go to such extremes?  But my mind quickly wandered to the bigger picture:  An obsession with the superficial is precisely what’s eating away at our country.  People have come to love the ornaments and lights, but what about the tree?

Think for a moment about some of the comments you’ve heard as to why individuals have or haven’t voted for a particular candidate.  Here’s a few I made note of in New York City around the time of the 2008 Presidential Election:

He’s so suave and well-dressed. (re: Barack Obama)

He just looks like a Vice President, you know? (re: Joe Biden)

He’s not charismatic enough. (re: John McCain)

She sounds like a hick. (re: Sarah Palin)

He’s handsome and I’d date him in a flash. (re: Barack Obama)

He looks way too old on TV. (re: John McCain)

She’s one hot mom. (re: Sarah Palin)

He has a degree from Harvard, so he must be smart. (re: Barack Obama)

She’s so not cosmopolitan. (re: Sarah Palin)

What our politicians look like, the clothes that they wear, and the tones of their voices have come to resonate more with voters than their records, policies, associations, and experience.  So what if he sat in a church with racist, America-hating Reverend Jeremiah Wright for twenty years while Wright baptized his kids and officiated at his marriage?  I mean, didn’t you hear his charming speech?  Hope, change, and yes we can were more catchy in 2008 than the fact that only one candidate on either presidential ticket had run anything, and it just so happened to be a state.  Why?  Because hope and change were delivered in a fancy sounding package with a complementary Ivy League bow.  And the state?  Well, Alaska’s so…primitive.  I mean, do they even have a Bloomingdale’s?

At a time when candidates’ crow’s feet, snooty degrees, and lofty talk are paid greater attention than whether or not they actually get things done or have a record of quality leadership and sound judgment, why are we surprised when politicians rise to the top who offer nothing but pretty discourse, handsome swagger, and a whole lot of nothing?  We shouldn’t be.

When it comes to candidates, I don’t care if they could easily be Homecoming Queen or King, if their clothes are well-suited for a Barneys window display, or if their teeth shimmer with all the signs of a recent lunch hour at BriteSmile.  And I’m about as impressed with their Ivy League degrees as I am with my own—as in not very.  It’s time for American voters and the media to get their priorities in order.  Be mesmerized by their policies, not their pontification.  Spend your nights researching their voting records, not the trendy restaurant they were last photographed in or the must-have shoes they sported at the latest D.C. rally.

They aren’t starring in your favorite Tuesday night miniseries or taking you out for dinner and a movie.  They are running your country.

Jedediah got it right again. The next time I look at a candidate I’ll ask myself- what did he/she actually accomplish in their lives.

It is truly unfortunate that the management of the greatest society in the history of civilization is determined by form over substance. I blame the decline of the Judeo-Christian values upon which our country was founded. I have never seen ‘bling & beauty’ as part of the bible’s description of what is important in this life.

Jedediah is so right, McCain graduated at the bottom of his class in the Naval Academy, but did he let that stop him from crashing 5 Navy aircraft? Did he let himself be limited by his marriage from meeting the girl of his dreams? No. Instead people shallowly voted for the candidate who was still married to his first wife, what kind of moral message does that send? We need a president with teh backbone to cheat on his wife and leave her as soon as he has a better deal!

What you are forgetting, what should be the core for all: “Seek ye first His kingdom, and all will be added unto you.” Book of Matthew What happened to praying about it first, asking God to show us. If what Patrick says-’needing a President with the backbone to cheat on his wife, then I feel sorry for us all. That is not God ordained, That is what happened to us as a country, we put God last!

If I remember correctly, great civilizations throughout history have lasted an average of 200~400 years. They grow strong when their people are fighting their way out of some difficulty (e.g., tyranny). They work hard, live simply and decently, and become a strong force to reckon with. Eventually, their power leads to apathy–they are invincible–they no longer need to work so hard. That then leads to decay and subsequent defeat by some other struggling, emerging people. We are due. Our nation was made strong when we recognized that our only strength came from God. We were helpless without Him. We became fat, dumb, lazy and happy in our blissful ignorance. We took control back from God without even realizing what we were doing. Unless we once more recognize, as a nation, that we cannot do this on our own, we are in for a sound thrashing. We who understand this must remember that ultimately, God is in control, regardless whether or not we acknowledge the fact.

Glad to see that the organization that I joined has like minded people who are unafraid to tell it like it is. I am asuming that the lack of an idiotic point of view means that the only people that have joined are those that fully awake. Now how do we as an organization help wake up the rest of the compalcent in ouor mist?

Jimmy the horse is right and Patrick needs to examine his conscience. We can be complacent as bill says but right now the country is becoming less complacent. Thank God for that.

  • Joycelyn Says:

A certain way to vote for the right candidate is to watch what they DO and not what they say. Usually the two do not agree. What’s wrong with checking out their previous voting record? That’s the best judge of character, morals, convictions there is.

    Well Jedediah,

I think people are so superficial willingly, because they hate to admit to truth and the pain of the future realities of life.

I take a Biblical viewpoint and think we are heading toward the one world govt. religious and monetary system spoken of in scripture, and we will not be able to stop that, so people ought to take a real look at life, temporal and eternal.

  • Robert McKenney Says:
    January 30th, 2010 at 8:17 am

Joycelyn is correct also, our Republican Senators in Maine have betrayed us. Another example is the tough SOUNDING TV blips we see when Timothy Geitner was being grilled, but where is the punishment, or resignations of people like him? It is only a dog and pony show without any punishment or corrections, after the fact. After our tax money has been distributed to Wall Street, auto makers and the banking system.

  • Susan Sweat Says:

Most of the people who made those comments I’m sure had no idea of policies or ideologies of the candidates. I will say, that I’m tiired of always feeling like I vote for the lesser of “two evils” so often I’ve wished that on the ballot we had an option tyhat said “none of the above: start over”
But people forget their civics class as well. Congress makes the laws-all of them and a president cannot pass a law without enough willing partners. We control our destiny and our childrens destiny every time we enter the ballot booth and yet most voters couldn’t tell you anything of substance about why they voted the way they did. Sad, very sad.
I hate to think of what will happen when today’s teenagers become the leaders, most of them can’t read above 4th or 5th grade level and even those who can don’t read.

So VERY TRUE Frank !!!! You hit the nail on the head !!!

  • Nick Borden Says:
    January 30th, 2010 at 9:00 am

It’s as one of our forefathers said (I’m thinking Thomas Jefferson said…”The system is certainly a good one, but not without it’s flaws. As soon as the people learn that they can vote themselves money, then will begin the process of destroying what we have built.”

What this means is that once the American people began voting for politicians who would approve any program or policy that financially favors one person or group of people over another, then that will trigger even more of these programs, which will snowball out of control until we can’t afford anything anymore.

Welfare programs are a large part of the problem here. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for helping the poor, but mandating that all americans contribute so that the govt can hand out the money removes two essential parts of the charity process.

First it removes the donors sense of pride and their joy in helping their fellow man by having his money TAKEN rather than GIVEN. Why feel good about something you didn’t do FREELY.

Secondly, and perhaps even more importantly, it breeds a sense of entitlement among those who are needy, which then subtracts their sense of appreciation for the assistance.
Why be grateful for something the system entitles you to?

These two combined are a factor that should concern everyone, but there is one more negative result, which I believe is a major fact as to why these systems were started in the first place.

Some people just plain hate God.
You may be asking what that has to do with it.
Before govt welfare programs provided for the needy, and before big charity organizations (which most of these also contribute to varying degrees to the sense of entitlement I mentioned earlier) churches provided the vast majority of aid to the poor. Included in this aid was PERSONAL conversation about why these forms of help were being provided. It was because Christian people were sharing the love of Jesus Christ they had received.
In some cases, it was Christians helping Christians, but in others, it was Christians helping non-Christians. Either way, God’s word, and love was being spread.

NOT SO with govt provided aid.
ALSO NOT SO with MOST charitable organizations.

I do not donate to charities very often. It’s not because I’m stingy, or because I hate poor people, it’s because I don’t agree with the affect they have on America. If I could get away with it….I wouldn’t pay the part of my taxes that goes towards welfare programs either, but the Bible actually says I should pay taxes (“give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, give to God what is God’s”) so I do. Not that I don’t believe it should change.

The point is…. Govt control of all these poverty reduction or poor assistance programs is just an attempt to subtract God’s message from work that the churches and individual citizens SHOULD be doing.

Nick, I agree with you on most of what you said. But when you quote Jesus “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the thing that are God’s” I get a little warm under the collar. Not that I don’t think we should contribute to the maintaining of law and order or public services, but God only asks for 10% of our firstfruits;the IRS asks for 40% or more. The least they could do is ask God for advice on how He manages things. I resent having to fork over almost half of what I earn to a corrupt bunch of politicians who live high on the hog at my expense. I’m encouraged that we still have a sizable percentage of the population who are not lying down and playing dead! Go Conservatives!!!!

Jimmy, the horse, please make yourself known. You are the type of person who KNOWS right from wrong and doesn’t back away from saying it to any and all. After 9/11, God’s name was mentioned in every “speech” by black, white, Christian and Jewish leaders. Prayer lamps, lights and signs were all over.
We have put Him last, instead of first, and only when we could see no other help. Yet, we still allow Him to be overlooked, undermined and even denied. Kate Smith must be turning over in her grave. For those of you who don’t know Kate, she was the gal who sang “God Bless America.”

One of our biggest problems is that congress is supposed to pass laws but some of the laws they have passed are to set up bureaus ( as in bureacracy ) with such open ended powers that they then can make rules without consulting congress. Those rules then carry criminal penalties and often make little or no sense. This is how elevator operators were considered to be under the authority of the interstate commerce commission because people from other states used the elevator to get to another floor. We need to revamp the whole system. Look at the Czars we have today.

We love this country too much to see it go down because people are swayed by ‘Hollywood’ thinking. We enjoy a good film, but are ever aware it is not the REAL world. WAKE UP America before all that our forefathers and present day warriors sacrificed to give us and our descendants is lost forever. INDEPENDENCE, FREEDOM and our way of life hangs in the balance. We can fix what’s wrong without throwing away what’s right. Let’s do it while we still can.

  • Roger Heim Says:
    January 30th, 2010 at 10:07 am

I want to commend Nick Borden on his comprehensive message. I fully agree with what he had to say.

There is so much being said and petitions being circulated, by groups like the ACLU, that complain about separation of church and state. What they don’t realize or just flatly ignore is the fact that separation of church and state means that government can’t tell us who or how to worship but it does not say that our government can’t be run according to the precepts of God and the Bible. Even though our type of government gives everybody certain rights, I don’t feel that our government should legislate for those activties by certain groups of people that are harmful to a moral society and an abomination to God.

Also just to add that we need to support Israel at all costs(I am a Christian). We need to support them financially and militarily so they can fend off the nations of the mid-east and world that have sworn to destroy them. I do not feel that our present administration has Israel’s or, for that matter, the United States’ best interests in mind. We know Israel is going to be victorious in the end and I would like to see our country on the winning side!!

Finally, I wish we could have upright and moral candidates running for Congress whether they be Republican(which I am) or Democrat.
The last number of elections I don’t feel we have had that. For me voting was usually for the better of two “evils”

Thank you for the oppurtunity to say what I feel.

Obama is NOT “for the people and freedom for all with one Nation Under God.” He wants to destroy everything this country stands for and unfortuntely is capable if we let him. Furthermore, Local judges have ruled in such a way that we know the judges have “taken the law into their own hands” Thus, the Progressive movement has changed our country by ignoring the constitution and what we teach in Civics is no longer valid..

We did have a sauve, debenaire, goodlooking, athletic. well articulated candidate with a long and proven record of success rescuing and running a state that was deep in the red. I really hate to say it……but the CONSERVATIVES are who got Obama elected. And for every single one of them who sat on their backsides at home pouting, refusing to vote, because they did not like the choices, well, dang, I hope you idiots are HAPPY now that you have embroiled us in a tangle of socialism from which we will probably never fully recover. You deserve what you’ve brought on us — although the ones of us who showed up at the polls do not. Sometimes one does have to choose the lesser of two evils to fight evil. I did not think much of McCain, I thought he was too liberal, but got out there and voted for him, because I did not want socialism to win. The last term George Bush served, he really stank, I got very aggravated with his mealy mouth fence straddling…..and I almost came to think that he was part of a big conspiracy to get Socialism elected, because he worked so HARD to anger and disappoint the entire Conservative party during his last term — which is a big reason why many of the whiney weanies threw up their hands in disgust and refused to vote, but if I had it to do over, I’d still vote the same, to get Bush in. The thing is — to elect a conservative, or semi-conservative candidate, EVERY SINGLE VOTER has to get out there and vote to make up the numbers, it’s gonna take at least 3/4 of the population voting Conservative to win ANYTHING….because, by and large, conservative voters aren’t cheaters. Dead Conservatives don’t vote, dead Liberals vote multiple times apiece. Liberals who are thieves and crack dealers vote multiple times apiece, Liberals who are zealous about their politics get out and pass out $5 bills and cartons of cigs to get street people who care about nothing other than their next fix to vote. And of course, ALL ILLEGALS who are voting vote LIBERAL. So you Conservatives need to stop whining, get off your butts and DO SOMETHING while you still have a vestige of a country to fight for. At LEAST, show up at the polls and don’t stay home watching asinine reality shows whilst you boycott the rights your forefathers died for. Now is not the time to lay back and whine. MOVE!!!!

Well said Jimmy the Horse! The problem with this country is first of all God has been put in the back seat. That was evident when they started publishing books and making tags that “God is my Co-Pilot”. What an arrogant quote! God is our Pilot and he is in charge and when this country gets brought to her knees which I believe we are already at the mercy of China, a communist country that nearly owns us because of our debt. Because of the wreckless spending of our tax money and the idiots that are in office at the present that disregard the voice of the people we have opened our doors to be defeated by enemies, foreign or domestic. We have allowed our History to be replaced by political correctness for fear of offending a minority of folks when the majority has had to suffer and if the truth were known the minority hasn’t got one bone of forgiveness in their body. All they want is all the money, benefits, and spoils from a people that left a land of tyranny to establish the land of the free and home of the brave under Godly principles because they experience a country that had too much government and put God in their back seat. I believe Jimmy is right, that we are going to have to be brought to our knees, so to say. I believe that this country is going to get aq bible lesson whether they believe it or not. The lesson: The wicked shall be turned into hell and all nationsthat forget God, and righteousness exalteth a nation but sin is a reproach to the people. I speak with the same Spirit that Moses had and that is that the Godless reprobates that are in the white house now will meet that same God face to face one day and realize the filthiness of what they are trying to impose on a people who want to love God and worship him in Spirit and truth. The greatnes of this country went out with this idiot that we have in office that still hasn’t quit apoligizing for our country being bullies and so mean to these other countrys by abuse of power. What a hollywood p#$^*. I don’t remember God apoligizing for Sodom,Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboham.nor for the population during the flood of Noahs day and if the world thinks these were just fairy tails then they are going to get a rude awakening. God help us! The platform that Nancy Pelosi,Barney Franks,Obama,Biden and that Mao woman(What an idiot) stand on came from hell itself and is getting the pits ready to be opened.

We must return to teaching our children what it means to be an American and give them that identity, otherwise it’s a beauty contest right? That’s my idea of “No child left behind” teach- teach- teach America and they will learn and the rest will take care of itself.

Everyone seems to be on the same path. We must become active and speak out for what we believe and want. I submit that Mr. Obama did not recieve a majority vote of true Americans. ACORN, the liberal media, and other skewing influences contributed to the numerially superior vote count. There will always be those who want, but not enough to work for it. There will always be beggers at the intersections in life. There will always be failures who blame others and beg to be redeamed. I say, let “natural selection” do its work. For those too stupid to foresee the consequences of thier actions, let them experience those consequences. Only winners should receive the awards. Losers should not be given trophies. Christians and Muslins have coexisted in the USA for decades, perhaps longer, without any open hostilities. Now, some in that religious sect advocate destruction and death based on religion and origin. Why haven’t the righteous Muslims risen against these gangsters? Is this sect of murderers unique unto themselves or is this something that has been fermenting for a long time and is just now coming out into the open? If there are bad Muslims, then there must be good Muslims. Make your selves known! Clean up your own mess !

To Answer John Beval’s question on why the “good Muslims” don’t condem the “Bad Muslims” you only need read the Koran to understand that if you do not follow the Koran which requires such dastardly actions against infidels and Muslims who do not follow the dictates of the Koran, you are subject to the harsh, bloody actions dictated in the Koran against those who do not adhere to the Koran’s teachings. Just note in our country the number of Moslems who have killed their family members just for them leaving the teachings of the Koran and becoming Christians or not following the dictates of Islam. There are many Accurate and informative books on Islam, it’s history and practices available and I would suggest; “The politically Incorrect Guide to ISLAM”, by Robert Spencer as a start to understand the dangers we have as freedom loving folks.

Well look at your last two Democratic presidents, bill clinton & barac hussein obama. bill’s friends are all either dead or in jail. Both are really great speakers but have no substance. Neither one care about the American people, just themselves. And our latest one, whatever you want to call him, is the worst of all. He has no respect for our country or the people in it. His radical left wing agenda is all that is important to him and his, finally proud to be an American, wife. What a joke on the American people. We elected a fancy suit with a great speech with the help of a stupid media. That was our fault for letting them steal the election with a joke for a candidate. He is a liar and a failure and most of the normal media is still letting him hide behind them. If they have any balls they will ask him a few of the hard questions they overlooked in the presidential campaign. All of the illegal voting that was done by aacorn, whom we keep funding. Who was arrested? Who followed up on other counties and election headquarters? Where was the news medias follow-up. Yes the Republicans are as much to blame by staying home, but the people of America deserve better. Stand up America, we are a great country. Don’t let these idiots ruin our country. Einstein once said,”There are only two finites in the world, the universe and the stupidity of man, and I’m not to sure about the former”. We prove him to be correct in so many ways. Let’s hope next November we can show him we can use common sense when we vote. I don’t believe Obama will make it through his four year term, Hopefully not by any violence, but by impeachment. If enough people were to raise hell over his brazen rule, it could happen. He’s not the only major problem we face today though. Crime costs the taxpayers over three trillion dollars a year. If we would punish the criminals instead of persecuting the victim, abolish the ACLU, (All Criminal Love Us), and limit the number of lawyers per capita, disbar any lawyer who files a frivolous law suit, and stop treating prisoners to amenities the working man can hardly afford. i.e. Three squares a day, free medical and dental, a warm place to sleep, TV and head of the line organ transplants even to those on death row. Death row? Figure on about twelve years his lawyer can make money while appeals are in the works. A criminal caught committing a heinous crime, witnessed by many, is still “innocent until proven guilty by a court of law”. So guilt or innocence has nothing to do with it, it’s just a matter of who has the smartest lawyer. Maybe if we stll spanked kids to teach them that household rules were to be obeyed, we wouldn’t have a generation of idiots we see today. Good parenting is now considered to be child abuse. Self esteem is thought to be another school supply, and can be passed out with pencils and erasers. Where will it all stop? When we come to our senses and elect some leaders who have some common sense. We could pick names from a small town phone book and get better candidates for office.

I took time to go through the replica of Independence hall and listen to a mock-up of the Contenental Congress and I told the cadets what I had heard during the re-play of what was said. The speech that was made by the President of the Contenental Congress. The then President of the Congress after signing the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution and Declaration of Independence was as follows: By signing these historic documents,we pledge our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor. Then if future generations do not remember what we do here then GOD help us all.” These principles SHOULD be taught in our public schools and our legislators should be reminded of that speech and what the early citizens of this then-young fedgling republic. Risked in the face of what they knew would probably happen to them. Our current lawmakers or at least quite a few of them have come to believe they are some kind of royalty. John Belveal I appreciate your wanting to beleive that there are two classes of Muslims, good & bad. The fact is that the Muslim religion itself is the problem. Together with the PROGRESSIVE movement started by Teddy Roosevelt these are the two most evil influences in today’s world. Both are paths to Tyranny. The ideas embodied in the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution are ideas that have set billions of people free from Kings and Dictators over the last 240 years. The basic idea that INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS come from our CREATOR and not from a government or King is revolutionary. The PROGRESSIVES and Musim Religion are in direct opposition to the founding fathers beliefs. The Progressives and Muslims beleive that the rights of the governed are bestowed on citizens by the government. When Progressive members of both political parties want to solve problems through the power of the Federal government and they do so beyond the LIMITED powers given to the Federal government in the Constitution they are inflicting on us TYRANNY. All modern day Presidents except for Ronald Reagan and Eisenhower have to one extent or another been PROGRESSIVES. That’s why we are in trouble today. The conflicts within each of the political parties today is between the Progressives and those who beleive that the Constitution means what it says and nothing more. The Progressives say that the Consttution is a living document and has to be flexible and it’s meaning to be interpreted and influenced by modern times. That is like saying the TRUTHS of Chrisianity set down at the beginning can be interpreted and changed to fit moden social structures; that is why today’s organized chuches are going astray. The only way out is to return to the fundamentals of our Republic as outlined in the Constitution. Vote people into office that stand for LIMITED GOVERNMENT and FREEDOM for the CITIZEN.

Racism is not the issue in current society but religious bias is quite alive and an abomination to our freedom. Mr. Romney fits the bill for a President and anyone judging him due to his religion, should be personally scrutinized and run out of the country. Look at John Edwards, our Republicans that left office also for marriage problems, the NY AG, and then the “far right” Christians (I am one, so I know) sit in judgment because of his religion. Shame on you, self-righteous, conservatives. Can the Mormons hurt anyone, especially when you see the teenagers I teach in Middle and HSchool. Nixon was a Quaker and it had nothing, literally nothing to do with his governing. Better that he was a Mormon than a Marxist, or what we have now. I feel much better because I would love to think Americans could rise to the professional level of Mitt Romney, but sadly, they are not taking applications from the best qualified to “LEAD” this nation of believers! If the socialist activists are able to convince enough minorities and poor they are incapable of taking care of themselves, and that becomes a strong enough a voting block, they will be in a positon to legally vote the money out of one persons pocket and put it in another’s. I am amazed at how MANY people are in agreement that Obama is/was not the correct choice for the presidency, due to inexperience and his little to zero level of loyalty to America. But Obama didn’t promote “that” message. What Obama promoted and promised, was change, in WDC; how things would be handled with those lobbyists; and the silver lining of health care. I don’t recall Obama providing info on how/what changes would occur or how his health care plan would be paid for, but it doesn’t seem to have mattered, because people/the voters bought it: hook, line & sinker! Now, approx going into his 13th month in office it seems the changes effected are minimal, and health care is in a standoff – and who exactly is going to pay for it? An earlier post by someone claimed that Obama was, “…shallowly voted for, because he was still married to his first wife, what kind of message does that send? In recent news stories, info has come out re John Edwards re his affair AND having a child with said woman. I think as human beings, we are all subject to temptation and we need to guard against it. I am sure in the hustle of campaigning, the individual needs to be aware that things can get out of hand and its 1AM and all of a sudden, you’re forgetting your spouse, because this young vibrant person is filling your ego with nonsense and splat – mistake made. I think we need to get back to the basics, loyalty, integrity, and is the candidate QUALIFIED to do the job that he/she is running for. Take away the fluff, designer shoes, etc and analyze what the person has done prior to running for office and how does that QUALIFY him/her for the position they are trying to get voted into. Thank you for listening and may God Bless America!!!
