AMAC Supports Bill to Grant Faster Access to Potential Life-Saving Therapies for Seriously Ill Patients

S. 3872 accelerates the approval process for potential life-saving drug therapies for patients experiencing progressive diseases. It also represents a step forward in positively reforming the FDA’s drug approval pathways.

Dear Senators Braun, McSally, and Murkowski:

On behalf of the 2.2 million members of AMAC – Association of Mature American Citizens, I write to offer our support for S. 3872, the Promising Pathway Act.

The likelihood of contracting a life-threatening illness increases as we grow older. This can mean lowered resistance to viruses such as COVID-19 or increased risk for cancers and heart disease. AMAC members are all too familiar with compounded health risks as they enter their retirement years. They are also aware that timely access to treatment is crucial to surviving illnesses.

The Promising Pathway Act provides hope for the old and the young by requiring the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to establish a rolling, real-time, priority review pathway to evaluate provisional approval applications for drugs intended to treat, prevent, or diagnose serious or life-threatening diseases or conditions, including those that pose a threat of epidemic or pandemic. S. 3872 works to provide FDA provisional approval to drugs that demonstrate substantial evidence of safety and relevant early evidence of positive therapeutic outcomes.

Your bill would accelerate access to potential life-saving therapeutics for patients experiencing serious conditions and it represents a step forward in positively reforming the FDA’s drug approval pathways.
