AMAC fully supports the Senior Independence Act. This legislation will help seniors who want to continue to work while taking early retirement by raising their earnings potential before seeing a reduction in benefits. Increasing the earnings limitation to $30,000 per year is a thoughtful and beneficial change that should be adopted by Congress. As a proud seniors’ organization, AMAC thanks Congressman Grothman for introducing this bill and standing up for our members and the millions of seniors across the United States.

The Honorable Glenn Grothman
Wisconsin’s 6th Congressional District
1427 Longworth House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515

Dear Representative Grothman,

On behalf of the more than 2.3 million members of the Association of Mature American Citizens
(AMAC), I write to offer our support for the Senior Independence Act of 2022. This legislation
will help millions of recent retirees by ensuring they can keep more of their Social Security
benefits while continuing to work.

Early retirees who choose to continue to work and receive a second source of income are often
subject to imitations on the amount of earnings they can have before Social Security “takes
back” a portion of their benefits. In the years prior to the beneficiary reaching full retirement
age, this benefit reduction results in the worker’s benefit being reduced by $1 for every $2 they
earned over the limit.

The Senior Independence Act of 2022 will amend the Social Security Act’s “earnings test”
provision such that the limits on individual earnings subject to withholding of benefits is
increased. For the year 2023, an early retiree could earn $30,000 before a reduction in benefits
occurs and will be adjusted annually based on the National Average Wage Index. This legislation
will allow early retirees to earn more to supplement their income before reaching full
retirement age.

As an organization committed to representing seniors, AMAC supports efforts to protect our
members. Thank you, Congressman Grothman, and your attentive staff, for introducing
legislation to help make retirement easier for our members.

Sincerely,
Bob Carlstrom
President
