Dear Senator Braun and Leader McConnell,

On behalf of the 2.3 million members of AMAC – Association of Mature American Citizens, I write to offer our support for S. 1777, the Don’t Weaponize the IRS Act.

AMAC and our members have been fully engaged in the fight to stop H.R. 1, the dishonestly titled “For the People Act” and its egregious provisions. We are particularly concerned that this bill permits the IRS to investigate and consider the political and policy positions of nonprofit organizations before granting tax-exempt status. We believe this puts the IRS in a position to target organizations engaging in First Amendment activity with political views that some Washington bureaucrats find unfavorable.

The Don’t Weaponize the IRS Act codifies a Trump Administration rule that does not require certain tax-exempt organizations to disclose the names and addresses of donors to the IRS. H.R. 1 seeks to repeal this rule and take us back to the level of scrutiny the IRS reserved for mostly conservative organizations during the Obama-Biden Administration. It is clear to see the potential harm this provision in H.R. 1 would cause for political advocacy in addition to exposing donors to possible harassment.

Thank you, Senator Braun and Leader McConnell, and your many cosponsors, for legislation that protects the First Amendment and facilitates robust political discourse. AMAC appreciates your efforts to prevent partisan Washington officials from using the force of government to punish people and organizations with whom they disagree, and we are pleased to offer our association’s full support for S. 1777, the Don’t Weaponize the IRS Act.

Sincerely,

Bob Carlstrom
