In recent years, our nation’s most treasured sporting events have become consumed by players, leagues, and corporations abusing their platforms to advocate left-wing political causes—but when it comes to athletics, just as in foreign relations, politics has historically stopped at the waters’ edge. As the world gears up for this summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo, however, there are signs that the left’s insufferable wokeness is already destroying yet another once-great institution—the unifying patriotism and extraordinary excellence of Team USA.
Hammer thrower Gwen Berry turned her back to the flag as the National Anthem played while she was on the medal podium during Olympic trials on Saturday. Berry had previously been suspended for a year by the U.S. Olympic Committee for raising her fist during the National Anthem at the 2019 Pan American Games. But now, woke athletes like Berry have bullied the Committee into allowing anti-American protests during trials, and even demanded apologies for having been punished for breaking the previously existing rules. Berry has allegedly received such an apology from the CEO of the U.S. Olympic Committee, and is apparently going forward emboldened.
“The anthem doesn’t speak for me. It never has,” the athlete said.
After the National Anthem played during the medal ceremony on Saturday, Berry declared “It was a set-up” and “real disrespectful.”
“I was pissed, to be honest,” she said. Left unanswered is what Berry will do if she wins an Olympic medal and the anthem is played in recognition of her achievements at the Tokyo games.
Far from an anomaly, Berry’s actions are just the latest in a series of red flags that suggest America is barreling toward international mortification as our “woke” athletes attempt to out-virtue signal each other at the Summer Olympics. Her fellow American Athlete, fencer Race Imboden, was also suspended after he protested the National Anthem in 2019 by taking a knee.
Perhaps the most shocking prospect is that raised by transgender BMX Freestyle bicyclist, Chelsea Wolfe. Recently, social media posts of Wolfe’s surfaced in which she stated that she wishes to win an Olympic medal so she can have the opportunity to burn the American flag in front of the entire world, and also implied that someone should assassinate Donald Trump.
In a now deleted Facebook post, Wolfe shared an article from PinkNews, a UK-Based LGBTQ interest news site, discussing the Trump Administration’s stance on transgender athletes. She added a caption stating, “My goal is to win the Olympics so I can burn a US flag on the podium. This is what they focus on during the pandemic. Hurting trans children.” In the comments section, Wolfe also implied that President Trump should be assassinated. She stated that she “would never say that someone should explode the head of the President. That would be illegal….but I will say ‘with dynamite.’” This, she explained was “just a sentence fragment” that is “not necessarily related to the sentence that came before.”
The unusual phrasing of her posting was attributed to a comedic video in which an individual explains the legal ways one may incite violence against, or threaten to murder, the President of the United States. The social media posts were discovered by journalist Ian Miles Cheong, and Wolfe quickly deleted them after the first stories appeared.
All of this raises the question of whether the U.S. Olympic Committee, in lifting its ban on such extremism, is inviting a boycott by normal Americans. The NFL, MLB, and NBA have all seen catastrophic declines in viewership since “going woke.” Americans may be even less likely to tune in to see athletes they don’t know, playing sports they don’t watch, impugn their nation in front of the entire world.
While Wolfe’s ambition to burn the flag would certainly be unprecedented in American-Olympic history, the sentiments these leftist Olympians expressed have become commonplace in domestic athletics in recent years. Kneeling has become so frequent at national sporting events that many stadiums are either keeping their players in the locker room or not playing the anthem at all.
The Olympics, however, are an entirely different playing field. All Olympians are expected to represent their sovereign country, and the International Olympic Committee has made it clear that any form of protest is strictly prohibited. Presumably in an attempt to head off major international incidents rather than out of any concern for the reputation of the United States, the IOC has made clear that any “demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda” by any Olympian will be severely punished. This includes all “Black Lives Matter” apparel. Athletes who persist may face disqualification, which would likely cause the United States to lose medals.
Predictably if ridiculously, several athletes are now protesting the ban on protesting.
Most notably, World Cup soccer star turned political activist Megan Rapinoe stated, “So much being done about the protests. So little being done about what we are protesting about. We will not be silenced.”
Wolfe, the transgender athlete, has yet to clarify whether or not, if given the opportunity, she still intends to burn the flag. Burning a flag on the medal stand would certainly result in an individual’s immediate removal from competition. Currently, she is still an alternate for Team USA at the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. She released a statement to Fox News saying, “Anyone who thinks that I don’t care about the United States is sorely mistaken…One of the reasons why I work so hard to represent the United States in international competition is to show the world that this country has morals and values, that it’s not all of the bad things that we’re known for.”
“I take a stand against fascism because I care about this country,” she continued, “and I’m not going to let it fall into the hands of fascists after so many people have fought and sacrificed to prevent fascism from taking hold abroad. As a citizen who wants to be proud of my home country, I’m sure as hell not going to let it take hold here.”
The text of this “clarification” certainly suggests that Wolfe means to imply she is not currently proud of her country, merely that she one day hopes to be.
As of publication, Chelsea Wolfe has not apologized for or retracted her statement about assassinating the former president.

Just. Don’t. Watch. Don’t give them the attention they seek. Simple.
Why does this author keep calling this ” Wolf” in Sheep’s Clothing by She, AS HE is not a SHE!
If any athlete does not want to show respect for either our anthem or our flag then they can pack their bags and leave to country of their choice. then they can see what happens when you disrespect that country!!. Everyone here is entitled to their opinion, but if you represent our country in something then you have to show honor and respect for both, otherwise stay out of it. As for professional athletes, they are highly paid entertainers in my opinion and do not get to flount their political opinion on the field.
It’s all about me, me, me to these sad folks. Hopefully they will perform badly and never see the podium.
I am planning to intentionally and gleefully miss the whole shebang. The left screws up everything, from the Boy Scouts to Disney to the Olympics and on and on and on…
I agree. I for one have no plans to watch the Tokyo Olympics.
She is fully entitled to her opinion. Yet if she is going to represent the USA, she should, By God, REPRESENT the USA! If it is too painful to do that, she should let someone else who is willing to represent the country, in all respects, go in her place. IMHO, her eyes are attracted to the $$$ that half-a$$ed sorry football player is getting for being all political, and selling overpriced shoes to the ignorant in return….
The ones that protested and those who said they plan to should be expelled and sent home! So what if we loose some medals in the competition !
Those protesters DO NOT speak for me or millions of proud Americans!
They certainly do to the rest of the world. Personally, I lost all interest in the Olympics after the 1972 Munich massacre.
We should stand for the flag and put our hands on our hearts for God’s great sacrifice for us. And kneel for the cross which gives us the unfathomable reason why we will spend eternity with Him, the Author and perfecter of our faith!!! This is why we love Him so!!!
Amen! One Nation Under God/In God We Trust!
So Berry thinks America is racist? Then how does she explain her presence there?
You can’t fix stupid.
Because she is a social justice warrior, don’t ‘cha know?
She is absolutely right. The anthem does not speak for her. It speaks for the nation she’s representing. If that offends her, then she can do like others have done, and compete for another country. And so can anyone else on TEAM USA, who’s there to represent America first, then themselves.
Brace myself?? The Olympics ceased being watchable decades ago..
Exactly
Yup, I agree. They went into the crapper after ABC lost the TV contract. Now all they show is track and field, swimming and gymnastics. Boring!
I never understood the fascination with the stupid human tricks loosely known as “sports”. The olympics are and have always been an utter waste of time and of the lives of those involved, who could have done instead something worthwhile. To the extent that it may open some peoples’ eyes and cause them to abandon their slavish devotion to “their team” I find the insane comments and attitudes we see coming from Big Sports as a positive development.
Addendum: I see many encouraging comments from people who say they are abandoning the olympics and Big Sports in general. This is fabulous but to be most effective please do one thing more. Find out who is sponsoring these circuses and who is paying celebrities for endorsements, then contact those companies and tell them you are boycotting their products until they end their sponsorships.
You could say the same thing about lawyers.
I have no intention of watching the Olympics
Gwen Berry and Chelsea Wolfe should move to another country. Cringe worthy; what awful people they are and to think they should be heard. Please leave the United States of America as soon as possible and never come back. SAD
BAE, I totally agree with you. I would be happy to help anyone pack so they could leave this wonderful country faster! If they don’t like and respect everything this country does for them, then Get Out!!!!
I would not waste my time watching the cry babies and professionals compete in these Olympics. Not even close to how it used to be.
Kind of takes the fizz out of watching when the USA pro basketball players beat (insert other national team here) by a score of 148 to 12……
Why is she living in the U.S.A. ? We need to feel sorry for this person. She is hurting, and the only way she can let the world know is to be hateful to the ones that put her where she is. She is a sad person.
You don’t support theUSA, thenthe Usa should not suopport you. Don’t allow her to play.
Well said Tom!
Why is this person allowed to even compete??? I will protest her protest by not watching any stinking Olympics if that is what it takes. If you don’t like our flag, our anthem or us, then stop representing us. Go,to,some country where you do like them and represent them.
Since the “woke” athletes seemingly do not care about our country, then they shouldn’t care if they are Disqualified because of their “demonstration of political, religious or racial propaganda “. The IOC and USA should take a ‘Strong’ stand on this matter. If athletes want to make everything political – at home – by so-called ‘exercising their right’ to free speech properly, okay. But, Not, I repeat NOT on the International stage of the Olympic game, which are held (I believe) to promote Goodwill among people of all nations. It is a time to put aside our differences and come together. Not express our personal views.
Both the IOC and the USA will cave. Bank on it.
Threatening the president of the United States is a federal felony under the United States Code 18, Section 871. I don’t know if that applies to a past president, but anyone making these kind of threats should be taken very seriously and dealt with accordingly.
Never going to happen. But thanks for playing.
